AC Emergency

AC DOWN? HERE'S WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW.

Before you call anyone, check these common fixes. About 30% of "dead AC" calls are simple issues you can solve yourself in 5 minutes.

CHECK THESE FIRST (5 MINUTES)

1

Check your thermostat

Make sure it's set to COOL, fan is on AUTO, and temperature is set below current room temp. Replace batteries if it's blank.

2

Check your circuit breaker

Find your electrical panel and look for tripped breakers. HVAC systems typically have 2 breakers: one for the indoor unit, one for outdoor. Flip them fully off, then back on.

3

Check your air filter

A completely clogged filter can cause your system to freeze up and stop cooling. If it's dirty, replace it and wait 2-3 hours for ice to melt before restarting.

4

Check the outdoor unit

Go outside and look at your condenser. Is the fan spinning? Is there ice on the pipes? Leaves or debris blocking airflow? Clear any obstructions.

5

Check the condensate drain

Many systems have a safety float switch that shuts off the AC when the drain line clogs. Look for water around the indoor unit. Clear the drain line with a wet/dry vac if needed.

STAY COOL WHILE YOU WAIT

Close blinds and curtains on sun-facing windows
Use fans. Even a $15 box fan moves air and feels 5-8 degrees cooler
Stay hydrated. Lowcountry heat + humidity is no joke
Open windows at night if temps drop below indoor temp
Move to the coolest room (usually first floor, north-facing)
